A visual language for the new institute
The Hawkes Institute is a multi-disciplinary research group at the intersection of UCL’s engineering and health activities. The institute capitalises on UCL’s unique combination of research excellence in computational, engineering and medical sciences. to focus on advancing healthcare technology.
The newly created UCL Hawkes Institute is the combination of two existing successful centres - WEISS and CMIC. The focus is on healthcare technologies at UCL with the range of research spanning medical image computing, computer assisted interventions, robotics, sensing new devices and much more.
The merging of two very strong identities into one, makes this the largest collective of academics in this research field in the world.
The Hawkes Institute approached So studio on the recommendation of other UCL faculties where we have collaborated on a range of different projects. Our brief was to create a new brand identity, which would give a visual platform to interpret the ground-breaking work of the institute.
The new identity would help promote the the work of the faculty across all digital and print communications.

Creating the concept
Our ideas centred around the creation of a graphic language, portraying visionary thinking, and a search for advanced ideas. The basis of a circle illustrates this visionary concept, with different interpretations of the circle illustrating the depth of thinking and research.

The visual language evolved to form different visual interpretations of the scanning and medical images that are a direct result of the research work carried out by the institute.
